Silver Springs

43Rest day, pretty much, except for lots of walking. We took a day trip to the nearby Silver Springs State Park  to explore and tour on the the glass bottom boat. The Silver Springs River is crystal clear and the glass bottom boats have been operating since the 1870’s when Silver Springs was Florida’s first amusement park. In the 50’s and 60’s it was used for movies and TV shows, such as Tarzan, Creature from the Black Lagoon and Sea Hunt.  Three years ago, it was re-opened as a Florida state park. The grounds are beautiful with walkways, a campground and many hiking trails. There are kayaks to rent, and a restaurant. Our boat ride turned into a bit of adventure when we were blown into a log and the pin in the electric motor broke. We were stranded for a bit, while another boat came out to rescue us.

We saw an alligator from the walking path, and again from the boat. Later, we spied, as we had hoped to, a troupe of monkey’s that live in the wild in the park. They are Rhesus monkey’s and have continued to live there and multiply since Tarzan’s days. Very cool to see the swinging in the trees and running through the woods!
